Community Engagement Meeting

Today, the Nairobi Rivers Commission led by Vice Chairperson Prof. Elijah Biamah and the Safer Nairobi Initiative hosted the Germany Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Sebastian Groth, Ms. Beatrice Karago, Deputy Permanent Representative of Kenya at UNON, Mutinta Munyati, Deputy  Regional Director of Africa at UN- Habitat and Former Mayor Joe Aketch for a World Cities Day celebration at Pumwani Social Hall.

During the celebration, the Nairobi Rivers Basin Community groups and local administration got an opportunity to interact with the delegation with regards to the work done by their respective groups in relation to Nairobi Rivers clean up and they too shared the challenges they are facing.

While addressing the delegation, Prof. Biamah shared the Nairobi Rivers Recovery Strategy Action Plan which focuses on 6 thematic areas. Prof. Biamah emphasized the Mandate of the Commission is that of coordinating all recovery activities along the three rivers of Nairobi, Ngong  and Mathare and with key players being the communities living along the Nairobi Rivers Basin.

The German Ambassador H.E Sebastian Groth applauded the Commission on the efforts done so far on the rivers recovery process.  He donated river cleaning hand tools, gumboots and gloves to the Nairobi Rivers Commission to be distributed to the community groups working along the rivers. On his address, the Ambassador observed that community groups should be at  the forefront in rivers restoration activities and the socio-economic transformation agenda.
